I rented an apartment for six months at BRE Union HIlls Apartments on Tatum and Union Hills. I knew there was something odd about the place when the second we handed the office our money and signed the lease they completely forgot who we were.
Before moving out, my roommate at the time and I went down to the leasing office as instructed, and put down our forwarding addresses and both of our names for the apartments to send the refund checks to. We were told at the time that the refund balance would be equally split in half and sent to us at two different addresses with our names written seperately on two different checks. Two days before we were to be out of the apartment complex, my roomate left to go to California instead of helping me clean up the messy apartment for move out.
Since we are no longer on speaking terms, I was expecting my own portion of the refund to come to me in the form of a check with just my name on it.
About a week ago, I received the breakdown of the balance of the refund and noticed their was a $110 dollar fee taken out of my balance for keys and locks not returned. I knew that I had returned the keys for my apartment the day after move out since I had so much cleaning to do on move out day and they are only open for a very short time on Sundays. I called the office and asked them why this amount of money was removed from my refund.
A lady named Stacey told me that my roommate had turned in her keys a couple days after move out so I was out that 110 dollars and there was nothing she could do. I asked her if there was anyway she could add that to the check that was being sent out and she said absolutely not. Since she was not willing to refund me the full amount I told her I would even except a partial amount of credit back. After she treated me like I was stupid and told me there was nothing I could do, I got fed up and called corporate. Corporate said they would look into it and shortly called me back and said I need to speak with Stacey again.
Today I received a check with my ex roommate's mom's name on it. My name was not even listed ANYWHERE on the check. I am just very thankful they sent me the check to my address as her mom would have kept the whole thing to herself.
I called the office and told them that I am no longer on speaking terms with my ex - roommate or her mom and they told me that it was my problem and there is nothing they can do to assist me. They told me I was out the money and unfortunately they cannot re-issue two checks as I was promised. I told the manager I was assured we would receive two seperate checks and she told me that the man whom I spoke with regarding the situation, Steve, did not know what he is doing and there is nothing she can do.
I kept asking her how their company could assure a customer one thing and then go back on their word later. She kept telling me that it is my own problem and she can not deal with roommate situations. Unfortunately, I have now lost three-hundred and eighty dollars due to this mess.
I understand that is not a great deal of money, however I work in Customer Service myself and feel that the company should not deny a customer help in any situation. I paid over one thousand dollars every month in rent and have nothing to show for it except for having been treated disrespectfully and unfairly by the staff there. I strongly suggest you do not rent any apartment from any BRE community as they do not care about anything but getting your money.
