I had to find a quick place to board my dog over Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately I came across Apolda Kennels, which was the only place I could find with openings. I wonder why.
I dropped my dog off with no problems. The gentleman seemed nice, and although the facilities seemed run-down, I felt comfortable leaving my pet there.
When I came back to pick up my dog a couple days later, I was immediately greeted by the same gentleman. He said absolutely nothing about any "incident" of any kind. He gave me my bill, ran my credit card, and then went to get my dog.
As he came back out the door, he stated that my dog was "bleeding a little." The back half of my dog's body was covered in blood!
My dog was happy to see me and was wagging her tail. I noticed that every time she wagged, blood would spray out of it. The gentleman at the store completely minimized the situation, stating that she must have "wagged her tail too hard" and must have cut it hitting it against something. Come on!!!
I immediately drove my dog to my veterinarian. My German Shepherd had to have 6 inches of her tail removed in order to prevent the "infection" from spreading and eventually causing her to lose her entire tail. German Shepherds are supposed to have long tails that almost scrape the ground as they walk. You can immediately tell that something is wrong when you see her.
I had to pay $300 for the vet bill, not to mention the money I lost when I had to have the blood cleaned out of my car, and my clothes that were ruined.
The gentleman working there showed absolutely no remorse or concern for my dog's well-being. The fact that he covered up the incident until AFTER my credit card was run through definitely reflects a lack of customer service.
I would STRONGLY recommend that you stay away from this boarding facility. I have no idea how long my dog was neglected from medical attention before I picked her up, and I was never contacted about the incident even though I provided an "emergency phone number" to the business.
