Company Ripoff will not reimburse me for breaking a gas line

We hired the company to insulate our crawl space under our house. After they started the job, an employee broke a gas pipe. My wife and baby were in the house at the time. The workers got my family out of the house and the fire dept called. I came home from work to deal with the situation. This happened around 11 am Dec 19.

I called the company to find out how to fix the gas pipe. I talked to Burnadette who gave me the option of using our plumber or using their plumber. I called our plumber but was not able to get hold of him. I left a message with him and waited about 2 hours. Around 1:30 pm I called a plumber I found in the yellow pages to get the pipe fixed ASAP so my family can eat, shower and have heat.

The plumber came around 4 pm and gave me an estimate of $1231.45 to fix the pipe. I called the company to tell them how much it would cost. I talked to the owner Steve Anderson who claimed that was too much to fix the pipe and that his plumber could do it for cheaper. Steve interviewed the plumber for about half an hour as he was suspicious of him and his proficiency but Steve was not a plumber himself.

My wife started to complain that we need this fixed so we can stay in our house otherwise we need to go to a hotel. Steve agreed that this should be fixed and that his company was at fault. He continued to complain about the plumber and the cost. He indicated that we should probably sue the people who installed the gas line originally. The plumber worked on the line for about 3.5 hours. We then called the gas company to come out and inspect everything.

At the end of all this we decided it would be in our favor to cancel the check we gave the workers as it sounded like we would not be reimbursed. This we felt gave us some leverage in the situation.

The next day we faxed him a doc explaining that were wanted to be reimbursed for $380.45. His job cost $851 and the pipe cost $1231.45 to fix so we just wanted the difference.

He said we should cancel the payment we paid to the plumber and go after him. He is blaming everyone else.
