Mike Ladder General Manager

Dear Mr. Ladder,

On Friday, June 24 Safeway Van Lines moved my family and I from our 3-bedroom townhouse to a single-family home (less than 2 miles away) in Bristow, Virginia. On May 4, I received an email from Safeway Van Lines Relocation Manager Bill Shade in response to my email asking for a price for the move.included in this email I sent to Mr. Shade was an inventory of the items we had in our townhouse that were to be moved to our new home. The email I later received from Mr. Shade quoted a total price of 9 hours at $90 per hour ($1,350.00). The email was followed up with Mr. Shade through numerous phone calls by my wife to Mr. Shade (The original notes written by my wife show the price quoted by Mr. Shade). My wife also told Mr. Shade that packing the house was a must, and he quoted a price of $450.00 for packing material. An agreement was made and we put down a $50.00 deposit.

On June 24, the moving people arrived and began work at 10:00 A.M. And completed the work at 2:45 A.M. The following day (17 hours). The truck used by the movers was not large enough for one trip, so two trips were made. After the truck arrived at our new home late in the evening on June 24 with the first load, the foreman presented paperwork and said I had to pay up front - and if I did not, he would not unload the truck! I reluctantly paid for the move up to that point (11 hours @ $95.00/hr - $1,045.00). The second load was eventually brought to our new home after midnight and again, I was presented with paperwork for the remainder of the move, this time with the cost for packing material. I was charged an additional $1,337.50 - which included a charge of $817.00 for packing material. And again, the foreman would not unload the truck unless I paid. He said he would drive the truck away and I would be charged an additional 4 hours to store the furniture in the truck.

In total, I was charged $2,432.00 for 17 hours and $817.00 for packing material. This is double the price Mr. Shade quoted. I am seeking to get reimbursed for 8 hours, and $367.00 for packing material I was charged. Also, I am seeking to get $300.00 (local contractor price) from damage to the upstairs hallway that was caused by your company.

I believe 17 hours to move furniture and household effects is excessive for a three-bedroom townhouse. I believe we were misled and should not have been charged double price. I sincerely hope we can come to an agreement without getting into a formal civil dispute. I look forward to your consideration.

Sincerely,
Joseph F. Clark, Jr.
