I bought a computer monitor on 9/1/04. The store had a "6 months same as cash" promotion, so I filled out the credit application. I asked the store employee if there was any charge for paying off the account early, and he said "No, just pay it off within 6 months and it's the same as if you pay cash right now."
I made monthly payments, and when I got the February statement I paid the amount remaining, which was clearly labled as "Account pay-off amount". Imagine my surprise when I received a bill in March for a $33 "debt cancellation fee".
I contacted BestBuy's financing agent and they said I had agreed to this fee when I signed the contract. I got out the document folder BestBuy gave me when I completed the purchase, which I assumed contained a copy of the contract. However the only thing in the folder was the receipt. I know I should have checked this in the store, but I stupidly believed the employee.
