Publix on mcculloch rd in oviedo is consistently racist, treats young minorities like trash, accuses them of stealing, ignores them at the deli, and managers laugh at them during job interviews. Several years ago I tried to get a job at this publix. Of course I an over-qualified for a cashier position, but was just a college student seeking to make some extra money.
When I went in for the interview, the arrogant manager interviewing me was very rude. When he asked me why I wanted to be a cashier, I told him that I had very good customer service skills and liked helping people out. When I told him this he began laughing as if "yeah right." He was condescending the entire interview and of course I didn't get the job. I went to that publix a lot and was constantly mistreated or treated rudely by cashiers and deli workers. At one time, I went to the deli and there was a white customer in front of me. Once the white customer was helped, the publix employee who was a white male laughing said to me "i'll be right back" and walked in the back while chatting with an employee. Five minutes passed and he didn't come out.
There were people just sitting around cutting meat and I was standing there just waiting. Finally one of the guys cutting meat said to me condescendingly like I was a child "has anyone helped you yet." I said "no" and then he said "awwwwwwwwww, i'll help you out" as if I was a five year old. Many times when I go to the deli, when it's my turn, all the workers will just suddenly pretend to be busy—even if the line is very long. Everyone will have to wait until a hispanic worker, or minority employee comes to help me, then while I'm being helped, all the racist white deli workers will rush forward to help the white people standing behind me—this has happened MANY times... And it is clearly discrimination and racism. I was even accused once of stealing—I had brought back a sub that was made incorrectly by a deli worker when someone bought it for me.
Since it was during christmas time and the lines were long, the guy at the customer service desk told me that when I got the sub, I could just take it and leave. When I got my sub and walked out, immediately a white jerk from the deli chased me out the store and condescendingly told me that I needed to pay for the sub. I of course explained to him that I had exchanged the sub for a previous one. He had no right just accusing me of stealing instead of attempting to find out the situation first. Finally I called a manager once to tell him about my ridiculous experiences at the publix store, and this idiot's response over the phone was "you don't sound like a minority." I was of course shocked and appalled that this pathetic buffoon instead of taking my complaints seriously or trying to find out why these mean racist deli workers were discriminating against me or other minorities, would just reply with an accusation that I wasn't a minority.
This publix and this entire ucf area and city is rude and treats young minorities and especially young women as if they are thieves. This particular publix is very racist, and I have had numerous experiences there with the employees and cashiers that were racist or unfair. There's no reason to target young women to pick on or treat badly. This is the worst publix, and no other publix i've been to treats people this way. I know publix has been sued for racism in the past, and people need to continue to sue this ridiculous company for it's bad practices, racist employees, and ignorant and negligent rude managers.
