I ordered phone service through SBC (previously named Ameritech) and requested 900 and 976 number blocking. About 6 months later my phone bill was over $1000 because of 900 number use. I called and demanded that the charges be reversed, because I didn't make them and I had requested the block. They claimed that they block was not properly installed and they'd credit my account. Of course this only came after being on the phone for an hour and being transferred from person to person.
Next month, I had an additional $1000 in calls, plus long distance calls (I did not have long distance calling enabled). They once again agreed to credit the account, but didn't want to seem to do anything about the problem. I demanded that they send out an employee to check the lines for tampering. Another hour of my time wasted.
A few months later I started getting letters from collection agencies for the 900 number calls! I will never again use SBC for my home phone service.
