Fired For Not Working Off the Clock

I was hired to be a Part Time Assistant Manager at a Dollar Tree in Racine, WI and started 11/2. The Store Manager pursued me relentlessly to take this job and so did the District Manager. They were so impressed with my resume and merchandising experience. I was told I would get training on how to do their store resets and how to read their plan o grams or ASR's as they called them. The Store Manager and the other assistant managers frequently talked about how they had to work off the clock to get work done and that the Store Manager knew but pretended not to know and she laughed about it. The store managers begged me to start right away and leave my other job that was at a competitor's retail store without proper notice and was given an incentive increase to do so. I stupidly did so since it seemed like such a great opportunity for me and I liked everyone and they liked me and we seemed to gel as a team.

My first week 11/3-11/7 I worked every day. I was given little training and I was given a reset to do with no help, no guidance, and the knowledge that the Store Manager was known to dislike anything done in a way that was not very particular but I did not know what those standards were. Due to how busy it was I was jumping between being a back up cashier and working on the reset. I could not finish it and when I came in the next day the Store Manager had undone all I had done with what little guidance I could find and was given by other management and then proceeded to tell me she did not want my help to finish it.

I stocked what I was given to stock but not as fast as their standards were but I was new and just needed to learn where everything was and had to go and I knew I would get faster as I had at my last job. I recovered the floor perfectly, was a back up cashier, stocked whatever I was given. Did any and all tasks given to me without question or complaint and even worked off the clock a few times to help. I was given about 4 hours total of training and did a lot given the fact I had no idea how things were supposed to be done at that store.

We received a visit from the District Manager on Wed. 11/6 that I was not there for due to the fact I had to take my child to the ER and when I went into work afterwards I was informed that he was mad because the store was such a disaster (which I knew going in) because the Store Manager refused to just put product out on the floor and was too stuck on the ASR's. He also was mad about working off the clock he was aware of (I was not caught) and breaks and lunches not being taken all the time. I was told to help clean up the store before he revisited and was given specific things to do that night and the next day. On 11/7 my list of projects grew and I was a back up cashier as well. When I went to talk to my manager after I took a lunch I told her I was at 34 hours but I still had about an hours worth of stuff left to do. She got upset about how many hours I had and told me to clock out. I told her that I had not finished certain things and she said fine but you must clock out. I assumed that the items I had left would be taken care of by the other management as I had seen done by assistant managers at my other jobs in retail. That was on 11/7 and I was not scheduled to work again until 11/11. On 11/11 I went into work and was fired for not completing the projects I had left undone on Thursday when I was told to clock out.

The store manager who pushed me to order Dollar Tree shirts that I spent $51 on and who had begged me to leave my other job without proper notice to begin my long future career with Dollar Tree told me that I had "wasted" 34 hours the week before being trained and new. And that I should have come in and finished my work over the 3 days I was off. I told her that she had said I couldn't clock in to work so why would I come in to work? She told me that yes she had said I could not clock in but I could have come to finish my work. That right there implies that I was supposed to work off the clock. The projects were all left for me to finish over the weekend for free. Now I have no job and I burned the bridge of my old job and I have to hope I can get unemployment. This whole thing sucks! I think I should sue this stupid company!
