The following is a review of my experience with an agent of Remax Rentals in the Champaign/Urbana, IL area (http://www.curentals.net/), Theresa Kamerer, and she can be contacted at 217-373-4891 as well as at [email protected]. I was suppose to see three properties but was only shown two after Mrs. Kamerer became agitated as a result of my vetting the houses. The first property, I asked if I could turn on the air conditioning to make sure it was working properly and after some hesitation, Mrs. Kamerer allowed me to turn the set temperature down such that I could hear it running. I then asked if I could turn on the heater/furnace to hear it running, she did not want to allow me to do so since that costs money. After some persuasion, namely wanting to make sure it functions properly before deciding to proceed further, she allowed me to turn it on. I heard some rumbling then the furnace settled down. I wrote down all my observations. We proceeded to the second house where I asked who is responsible to take care of the lawn. Mrs. Kamerer replied that the tenants are. I asked what would happen if the tenants did not maintain the lawn. Mrs. Kamerer gladly replied that the tenants could ultimately be evicted. We went to the garage and I asked if the lawnmower functions? She replied, “Let’s hope so, ” sarcastically. I then said, hope is not good enough, I care if it functions or not. I tested the showers to make sure they do not make a banging noise when hot water flows through the pipes as well as the water pressure and how quickly the water boiler heats the water. After about 2 minutes of this, Mrs. Kamerer asked me to complete my tests, to which I responded that the tests were not complete. She went outside and was on the phone, the only part that I heard was that she wanted someone to record another persons license plate. I guess she was referring to recording my license plate should I come by the office. I went outside to talk to her but then she went back into the house and locked me out. She said that we were finished with the home and I said I was not done testing the home. She said, “oh, we’re done.” I asked for her business card, she refused to give it to me and told me to contact her via email. I told her that I will contact her boss.
It appear it costs too much money for Remax Rentals in the Champaign/Urbana, IL area to run a shower, an air conditioner, and the furnace for a few minutes; gladly, it costs even more in lost income for this rental organization to operate as it does. I guess this rental organization does not want you to discover how cheap and deceptive they are until you sign the lease, by which point they can really start to screw you over.
