I have been scammed and later threatened by Certapro Hickory franchise ’s owner and his painters.
Before I hired them, I showed the owner the location of two areas of rotten wood that would need to be replaced before they could paint. I asked how much he would charge me; he said, “No, just the materials.” Then he explained to me how they would paint the house: one painter would spray paint the wall, and then another painter would use the roller to give it a nice, smooth look. They would also take the shutters off to paint the wall behind them so I wouldn’t have to see the old, nasty paint again.
I believed that Certapro Corporate would have set up rules and performance criteria that franchises need to follow for high quality control as they advertised themself as Professional House Painting. So,
even though the owner didn’t describe any of the above work details in the contact, I thought he wouldn’t lie, and he should have his pride to keep his word since he looks like a nice, trustworthy guy.
Unfortunately, I trusted him and here is what actually happened after I hired him to paint my house. He said replacing rotten wood was not in the contact, so he’s not responsible for it. He screamed at my face and told me to BACK OFF and let them do their job after I told him that his painters were trying to paint on rotten wood. Then, when they were finishing up the job, he came to check if there were any areas that needed touching up. I pointed out several areas with issues such as where they painted the wrong or mixed colors, where they didn’t prepare surfaces properly but painted on cracking/peeling surfaces, they didn’t take off shutters to paint behind them, there were several areas with running paints (because they didn’t roll after spray), there were also areas where you could still see the old paint color showing through, etc.instead of admitting it and correcting these problems like any professional painter would do, he pointed a finger at me and screamed at my face, “YOU ARE PICKY, TOO MUCH, YOU ARE TOO PICKY! ”
The next day the painters came back to re-do the awning. I asked a painter to touch up an area that he missed; he wouldn’t come but told his supervisor. Immediately, the foreman scolded and threatened me.
The owner called me the next day wanting to pick up his payment. I told him that I needed to look around again. Then I decided to call the Certapro Corporate office to file a complaint and tell them that I do not want these people back on my property, ever again. I’ll find another good painter to finish the job (the way it should have been done properly), and then deduct the expenses from his paycheck.
Now I have learned that if I need somebody to work for me, they need to write every single detail that they told me in the contact. My advice would be to check more feedback and reviews about the company that you want to hire. Otherwise, you cannot trust them at all.
