I am renting an apartment. My mother has paid for the rent on time (04/03/08); needless to say, she didn't put my apartment number on the check. We both went to the office to pay the rent on time. I spoke to the representative that know me very well for a short time and handed her the check. I left thinking all was paid until next months payment due. The next day (04/04/08) I received a letter on my door stating I was late paying my rent and a late fee would be applied and there after. I figured it was a mistake so I called the office on the weekend (04/05/08) and the operator stated they would be in at 10am on Saturdays. I kept calling and was told the representative is out on the property. I kept calling until 3pm; then was told the office was closed. I had left a message to have them return my call regarding my payment of rent. I returned from work Monday (04/07/08) and saw the representative who received my payment crossing the street and told her of the letter I received about the late rent and late fees; she states, "Everything is fine and no fees will be added to the account". She would talk to the accountant or I could call her myself and gave me the lady's name. She asked for my mother's name which is on the check. I told her I didn't have much time to call because I work during the day and go to school at night. She said okay, don't worry. I trusted this was fine. I asked her for a letter or something showing my account is fine and no late fees applied. She stated will call me the next day and leave me the information I requested on my door or place it in my mail. I then later received another letter of "Notice to pay" on (04/10/08). I figured since I had talked to the representative; this was just a late later sent.
I then received another letter on (04/14/08) I then called the office on (04/15/08) and spoke to the accountant. I explained to her what had happened and wanted to know if the payment had been processed on time. She was very adamant and stated since the check didn't have the apartment number the check sat in the office. I tried to explain to her I have kept in contact with one of her representatives and she had assured me the check was going to be placed on time without any late fees; we also verified my mother's name on the check. She states this account has accumulated a lot of fees ($145.00) and didn't think the fees would be removed. She then asked me to call back tomorrow (04/16/08) and speak to another lady in the office to see if she would remove them. She didn't think she would and hung-up.
I am very disappointed that this was not handled in a timely manor or the check was not place on the account the same day I submitted to the representative. I called the representative and told her the late fees are not removed; she states at this point its out of my hands and not able to help. This really made me upset. I couldn't believe that she went back on her word. I don't think this is right and I don't think I should be penalized. I received the notices at night when the office was already closed. I work and go to school so I am not at home during the day.
