Our home of 20 yrs burned up on 1-1.instead of rebuilding, we purchased a repo home on the other side of town close to my dad so we could look after him after losing my mother in 2007. We had several contractors come out & give us estimates including Haden Mathis of Mathis Home Builders. We used hime because of some work we had seen of his & due to the good references we received about his work. He seemed honest & gave us handwritten papers of the work and costs of everything he would be doing. He told us that we did not need a contract because he was a man of his word and would keep coming back until the work was done right & until we were satisfied with everything. That should of been my 1st clue!
We went in & did all the tearing out to save us money so when he started he could come right in & start working. We paid extra for lots of things such as the drywall person redo all the drywall to where it would look just like new. We had new crown molding put up and the wood frames put in several rooms, new floors all thru the house and every toilet, sink, & bathtubs, new lights, doors, knobs, windows, roof, plumbing, electrical, insulation, addition added on, new front porch put on, everything in the house was touched by his workers during the time they worked on the house. We also had the house painted inside and out where we requested specifically Behr paint, specific colors & was charged extra because they used more than 3 colors thruout the house. Needless to say, Haden never checked his workers work. I complained on a daily basis & was shrugged off by Haden saying you know I will never do you wrong & we will come back until you are satisfied.
Well for the last year when I call him he sends someone else over to patch up something, it took 2 yrs to get my wood floors redone & they still are not right. The tile has the wrong color grout in some places & they chose to dye it instead of doing it right & it looks horrible. They have left grout out in someplaces & have regrouted over & over in others & the Master Bathtub has leaked from day one. We were told our lights flicker & blow out and the outside & inside plugs trip the circuit because we are not getting enough electricity from Ga. Power, not because of the new wiring and circuit box they put in. Our new windows leaked gallons of water in my floor the other day because they did not caulk the outside of them, bulking my newly done wood floors. When I ask Haden to come out he sent his worker, he caulked it & we were told that it was our problem not his & we could take a fan or humidifier & blow on the floors & if they didn't fix themselves then we better think about calling our insurance company! Every time I ask him about my shower leaking he tells me to put a fan on it & dry it out. Now he refuses to do anything to make this whole mess of a job he has created right.
The front porch is litterally warping & falling apart, the tile is cracking in my foyer & has been since he put it in & said he would fix it, but he hasn't. The drywall that we paid extra for have pin holes all in them. When I started touching up paint, I found out they they used Sherwin Williams cheap paint so nothing matches. They refuse to fix my crown mold that is pulling apart, the wood is cracking on the wall panels. The doors they put in are warping, all the handles don't match, the frames around the doors & doorways are cracking or have big places chipped out of them. The stairs are pulling apart from the walls. The roof was replaced twice and still looks very unprofessionally done. Light fixtures are not even centered in some of the rooms.
We have been thru so much with this man and all the shotty work that has been done, we don't know where else to turn. Please, someone help us, we paid him every payment plus some as he wanted, extra when he asked, and our house is still not right & we are on a fixed income because of my husband having to retire and I don't have a job and now that they cleaned us out of all our money we had for the house to be done, they don't want to do anything for us anymore and they don't stand behind their work anylonger. He is now telling us that we had a 1 yr warranty and if anything else is done we have to pay more money & that is something that we no longer have. We paid him way over a $100K to do this remodel and believed all of his false promises to make everything right, now we are out of money & he doesn't know who we are or remember the promises he made. As far as warranties, he told us he had no limit on his workmanship or of anyone he hired to do work & he would make it right regardless of how long it took.
