While looking for an apartment I responded to an ad placed by Leopold Donchield on www.expatriates.com for the rental of an apartment at 50 Rue du Magistrat, Brussels.
After exchanging emails and phone calls with him, I visited the apartment on March 3, then went back on March 7th to sign a 12-month lease. The next day, I paid a security deposit and the first month's rent into his account. Unfortunately, there was nothing to indicate that he was not the owner.
The lease started on April 25; however, I am now unable to get in touch with Mr. Donchield: my phone messages and emails are unanswered. I went back to the apartment after it sunk in that I had been cheated; his name is no longer on the mailbox and no one answered the doorbell.
From a internet search, I have since found some information that would have given me pause if I was aware of it earlier. He purports to be a Cambridge educated independent financier who does business using various emails:
