I have Medicare and no supplemental insurance, so I'm responsible for 20% of whatever Medicare doesn't pay. I received a bill from the surgical center for a lump sum amount that was more than what my surgeon charged! I called and asked for a detailed bill to explain to me how they arrived at this amount. I was told there was no detailed bill available and the amount they charged Medicare was an "acceptable amount" for this specific procedure. I insisted that at some point there must have been a list created of individual "acceptable" charges specific to this procedure to arrive at this total amount and I wanted a copy of that so see if in fact I received had those items. I was told nothing like that existed!
Also, I asked my surgeon for a cortisone shot in my knee, completely unrelated to the procedure I was there for, since I was already there and because I really needed it. He gave me the injection, charged me the usual amount I'm charged in his office, but the Surgical Center added an additional $1100.00 to their bill for what they called the convenience of administering it to me in their facility! That's just wrong! Had I known, I would have waited & gone to his office for the injection!
I'm thinking Medicare fraud and I'm not letting this go! Has anyone else received a bill from this surgical center and questioned the amount without any acceptable explanation from them? And if you did receive an explanation, I would really appreciate knowing who you spoke to that was able to help!
