Canada/Lima Peru scam
Consumer Report

A young man calls crying and calls me "Grandma" and begs me to help him. He evidently is in a Canadian jail and wants me to help him get out. He pleads with me severl times to help him and makes me promise I will not tell anybody, especially family members.

Then a lawyer who says he has been appointed by the Canadian Court to represent my grandson says he can he can get charges dismissed by the Court and see that my grandson will not have a criminal record on file with Canada, but needs me to send $6,500 to LIMA, PERU! (via Western Union). When I asked about Lima Peru the supposed lawyer referred to it as a business which would be the cheapest bail bondsman way to go; otherwise it would cost $10,000. I said I did not have that kind of money. He proceeded to pressure me into trying to borrow from a bank, friends, etc.

I did not send any money to Lima, Peru! This lawyer kept calling back suggesting different ways I might consider to get the money.

I told him that I had just talked to my grandson. The lawyer said, "well your grandson is sitting right here". I, in turn said I thought it was very strange that the grandson could be in two places at once. I then hung up.

This guy was relentless, he kept calling back until my husband spoke to him. My husband and I are retired. Evidentially, this scam is being run on seniors — so be very careful. Just hang up on them and call the Police and the Attorney General of your state. That night on the evening news a senior lady reported that she had been scammed out of her life savings of $32,000.
