Consumer Report

Hi,

Last night some lady who claiming to be from "Windows support" called me at my residence. She claimed to have been notified by Microsoft that my computer was being hacked. She apparently had the ip address info which I could not verify as all the computers in the household use dynamic ip addresses. My first question was "are you a third party software company" and she said "we work with Micorsoft". When I asked her how she found my phone number she said that she got it off the Windows registration license - which I knew was impossible as 3 of the 4 laptops are registered at my old address. The one that is not is company provided and is registered with my company address.
Anyhow, she asked me to go through some troubleshooting steps to verify that my computer had been hacked into. All she did was to get me to open the event viewer. She said that some messages in event viewer were indicating that the computer had been hacked into. When I asked her to specify exactly which message as all of those warning, notifications and error messages were what you normally see, (I'm an IT professional myself and have worked in tech support for 10 years) she asked me to open up the website premiumpcsupport.com. At that point I got mad as she lied upfront when she claimed she was calling from Microsoft Windows. I just told her that I'd get my computer checked from my office tech support team and hung up on her.
I'm going to escalate and report this incident so that people do not buy into this scam and waste any of their time and money unnecessarily.
