Consumer Report

I had a vehicle license plate number and wanted to find the name of the person to which then vehicle was registered. I went online and found that there were websites that claimed to enable you to do that. I clicked on the DMVFiles.org website and saw that it claimed that one could input a license plate number and state and get information on someone. I did so and this took me to a second DMVFiles.org page where there were options for purchasing the service that would allow me to do the search. This page also mentioned license plate records as well as acces to a multitude of other records. I clicked on the $29.95 option and provided the necessary credit card information and then received a membership in something called MembersLogin.org. I logged in with the intent of doing the license plate search and found out that there were no options that allowed me to enter the name of the state along with the plate number to actually do the search (please remember that the very first DMVFiles page that I accessed did have a field to indentify the state in one's search). I had expected that once I paid the membership fee I would get the same search options as had been shown on the first page of the website. I contacted customer support (available only by email) and after a dozen emails back and forth (where I received unproductive suggestions to do the search. One suggestion was to give them the name of the person which was ridiculous because I was trying to use the license plate to find the name and not the other way around. A second response from customer support was to click through a series of menu options. But I didn't have the first menu option they were suggesting to enable me to follow their instructions.) After telling them that their responses were not helping and having a second person provide exactly the same useless responses. I was frustrated and asked for them to provide a phone number for me to call. They said they couldn't but then said they would do the search for me if I gave them the license plate information. I did so and they sent an email back saying they did a "deep" search and there were no results. I had actually seen the license plate on a vehicle, and thus I then concluded that they had falsely advertised their search capability. Since then I have done additional research and now realize that without proper authority (such as being an authorized investigator) it is not possible to do a license plate search. The claims of this website (DMVFiles.org) are totally misleading. It appears that they collect money and then provide something that is different from what their advertising says.
