Phillips Lighting is recalling Marathon compact fluorescent lighting because of a safety concern whereby the glass cover may come loose from the base and fall out and break. These lights are used in ceiling fixtures. They cost an average of $23 each retail. To replace the lights, one must match the model numbers and then check each light for a manufacture date. Phillips then allows you to register the defective lights at their consumer hotline (866-622-6372). At that time they advise you that they will send you mailing labels. You are required to package the lights at your expense and mail them to Phillips. They advise you that it can take up to four weeks for them to send you replacement lights. When asked how one might go about lighting their house in the interim, they suggest you purchase replacement lights. Since these lights are advertised to last about five years, their replacement lights will likely sit on the shelf for years before you actually need them. To summarize, Phillips has produced a defective light that they claim they will replace, but provide the consumer a nearly unacceptable solution to do so.
