Hewlett-Packard (HP)
No Tech Support

I bought my HP Pavilion dv7-1260us in early 2010. Recently, I bought an HDMI cable, which my computer does not seem to recognize. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the computer, which has worked fine this past year - rather I am almost certain it's as simple as downloading an driver or, adjusting the settings. I called up tech support to receive some guidance as to what I should do and was immediately informed that I would need to pay about $50 for someone to come over and fix my computer because my warranty is up. I explained that I did not need anyone to come to my home and fix my computer as I am positive this is a software issue that should be resolved easily over the phone. I was then informed that even this much tech support would cost me $50 and directed to go to HP's so-called support website if I want free tech advice. Needless to say, the website was utterly useless and contained no information whatsoever on this model's failure to recognize an HDMI cable.

I find HP's lack of any type of tech support completely outrageous. I would understand if I had to pay to send in my computer to be fixed, but that is not the issue. Before this computer, I owned a Dell for several years. On several occasions I called Dell for simple over-the-phone support - if for example my audio didn't work, they ran some troubleshooting, suggested drivers to download, and then only if the computer needed to actually be physically shipped out to be fixed was I ever charged. Had I known HP is completely incapable of offering the simplest customer service after a year I would have NEVER bought this computer.in fact, I cannot even speak to anyone their online chat service without paying a fee!

I regularly buy new computers every 3-5 years. This will be the last HP computer I buy - what's the use if I have absolutely no customer support after a year? I will probably return to Dell instead.
