I have been gluten free for the past five years, and I have watched as United State's citizens and companies have learned about the need for a gluten free diet and learned the best way to meet those needs. Most companies I come across either list gluten related substances in their ingredients or clearly state that their product is made in a facility that processes wheat or gluten related substances. Harry and David's Moosemunch product doesn't have any ingredients that contain gluten listed; however, in small print they say other allergens may be included that are not listed. As there are people with allergies to gluten that are just as severe as allergies to peanuts, it is absolutely ridiculous not to list that Moosemunch is in fact not gluten free. When I called the company to ask, they first indicated they didn't know, and later indicated that it is processed in a facility that processes wheat. This information needs to be on the label! This is not a game, this is a life or death situation - people can go into anaphylaxis as a result of a gluten allergy just like they can for a peanut allergy. The woman on the phone also indicated that the facility processes peanuts; however, that also is not found on their label. With so many customers, especially around the holidays, it is absolutely life threatening not to list the allergen information directly on the label. I am disappointed in the response I received from their customer service and I am very disappointed in Harry and David as a company. Not listing allergens can result in death by anaphylaxis, and the allergens need to be written on the label.
