During my service to my country in the US Navy, floating on the gulf during the first Iraq War, I applied for a savings account with a signature from my US Navy Captain verifying I was in the Persian Gulf, four times with Navy Federal Credit Union as this was the requirement to apply for membership when your in the military and overseas. I was returned the application with denied stamped and my initial deposit returned through my ship's mail room. Yes, they even sent it back to a military address in the Persian Gulf to me, saying I did not qualify because I was not in international waters.
I qualified and met all the requirements for membership with Navy Federal Credit Union and that is why I continued to send my application. So when I was on leave to my parents home, I sent it not from the Persian Gulf, but from the local post office in town for a fifth time and they finally opened a savings account.
I have banked with Navy Federal Credit Union for over seventeen years. Today, Navy Federal Credit Union is by far the worst Credit Union or Bank ever. If you think for one second Navy Federal Credit Union is there for Military Personnel or Veterans, you are wrong. Today, they will accept just about anyone for membership, there member service is absolutely horrible when you call, they pay nearly nothing in interest for your savings account compared to local banks, and beginning in March, if you have a Checking Account with Navy Federal with less than $50.00 in your account, you'll pay a monthly service charge. How does Navy Federal Credit Union benefit its members over a local bank? The answer is No Benefit.
If your in the military or a veteran, take my word for it, and don't even bother opening an account with Navy Federal Credit Union. This is not the Credit Union it used to be. There is no longer the prestige having a membership with NFCU. I closed all my accounts and opened an account at my local bank after seventeen years because looking back Navy Federal Credit Union is a worthless membership that benefited me nothing.
