Worked there until last week - temp job to get me through a rough time, yes it is a scam but the girls (and guys) who work there are people like you who need employment in a time when the economy in California sucks.
For many WCP is one of 2 or more jobs. The owner makes the employees sign a statement saying they will only work 3 hours and 59 minutes so that he doesn't have to give them a mandatory 15 minute break. There is no full time, closest thing is a 6 hour shift. All of the people who work there are good people, it is just their job - would you rather spend your tax dollars by supporting them on welfare? For many of them, who have no more (sometimes less) than a high school education this is start.
I would say nearly half of the employees use the convience of the part time hours at fairly high wages plus bonus to pay for schooling. Bonusing is extremely hard. Many are single mom's trying to get by and avoid welfare dependancy. No one can force you to buy anything from WCP. If you do, when you call and get rebutted for trying to cancel (that's her job, ok?) tell her nicely and firmly that you will go to the Atty General. See what happens. Again, don't come down on the people who work there. And no, Lisa doesn't exist, you didn't go to high school with her and she is definitely NOT Clint's daughter.
I don't know how i feel about cutting telemarketing jobs. Yes, they scam people and yes they are annoying but it's a free country. You have a right to be stupid. Almost everyone I know who has worked in telemarketing makes good money despite having little or no education, few skills and fewer opportunities to improve themselves. Many have been single parents who were filled with self-loathing because they didn't want to be welfare moms. These jobs offer high wages, the good ones treat their employees like royalty (I wouldn't necessarily say WCP is one of them, but AOL Tucson does!) It's a chance for people to earn good wages where there are few opportunities to do so.
Yes, stand up for your rights as a consumer, but don't forget the little people who need to work. If you are smart enough to avoid being scammed, you're smart enough to realize it's better for the twerps who own some of these companies to pay these people so you don't have to through your tax dollars (WELFARE). Work is work.
