When I decided I needed to earn more money at middle age to help out my immigrant Vietnamese wife and our two young children I was hesitant at first to accept a situation which was too demeaning for my background. However, my credit card debts were rising and I simply did not have the money I needed to open up my own medical office or clinic. So, I accepted a telemarketing position with the Political Call Center in Mesa, Arizona in order to make some fast cash even though the most you could earn in this position was about $10.20 per hour with small bonuses. After almost a year in this position and in total disgust with the President of the firm and managers for refusing to offer me a managers position even though I was producing consistently well I remember thinking my young son and daughter would be better off without jobs than in such a lousey position when they are teenagers. The office, which is run like a slave labor camp, was hiring and pushing new employees out of work daily and I realized there was some type of scam involved with the managers able to fix who got good leads to raise money for the conservative Republican issues the firm raises money for. These primarily young men and women were being ruined in the work force before they ever had a chance to get started in life. The criteria for being kept on board were being raised weekly insofar as how much money had to be raised an hour. And employees lose time and pay for lunch breaks and every moment they go to the bathroom. Furthermore, moderators listen in on the phone calls which have to be made back to back with no time for rest between calls and are at times ridiculously critical of simple little deviations from the script lines for these telephone calls. After Barak Obama won the last Presidential election by a landslide there was a shake up at this call center and I noticed even though I was using the exact same technique as during the past year to raise money all of the sudden I was getting bad leads and it was getting harder and harder each day to raise money as the firm began threatening employees would be fired if they did not raise more money. Finally I decided to give a resignation notice to this firm, which offered no benefits, and relocate to New York state, where I am a licensed physician, with my wife and our two kids, for better economic opportunities. I was not initially planning to report on what a lousey job this was with feelings I would need references from this group for business opportunities in New York. When, however, I realized this type of job on my profile as hurting and not helping both my professional and business interests I took the Political Call Center off of my resume and decided to file this report.in retrospect I feel as if I was on a chain gang in Mesa, Arizona while working for the PCC. And, as an aside now I am actually too liberal politically for even the Democrats, not just the Republicans, particularly after an experience like working for the PCC.
