L.A. Marketing, Inc. Vague and Evasive Interview, Strange Receptionist and Interviewer Uninterested in Job Experience

I can't thank you guys enough for posting your honest experiences and gut feelings about this company. I have to admit, I was a little bit of a sucker and got excited about my first interview this morning (before I read the postings on this site). Thank God I checked things out before going in for my second interview tomorrow!

You guys are SO right about this place— they make it seem as if they are really into you and they are really friendly and they act like you'll be super lucky if they call you back for a second interview. It's weird because in way, you like being told that the management was "impressed" with your resume, but it just doesn't seem sincere...

First of all, they mention it too often. (Almost like a guy at bar that just won't leave you alone.) Second, the interviewer (in my case, Johnny) doesn't ask you any questions about the skills/education/experience on your resume that he is supposedly so impressed with nor does he ever specify what is so "impressive."

In fact, anytime I said anything about prior job experience, he didn't seem to be paying attention. The only time he made eye contact was when he was talking about his "four steps to success" and how they have an account with AT&T. He had no interest in what I could bring to the job and would cut me off if I tried to talk about anything. Frankly, I think that they specifically attract people with no prior sales/management experience because it's easier to fall for the whole thing that way. Any prior sales experience and you'd be able to see this for what it is (much faster than I did, anyway).

Also, the receptionist (Audrey) was REALLY talkative and friendly. Unnaturally so. Uncommonly so. She kept asking the interviewees in the waiting room where they were from. This especially struck me as odd because she never had to pause to do any work or answer the phone. Her computer had a blank email box in front of it and she would pretend to stare at it once in a while and the phone NEVER rang. NEVER.

Also, she made overt attempts to relate to the interviewees who said they were from small towns. "I'm from Arkansas, " she would keep saying and "I was so scared to drive when I first move here!" It's as if it was some kind of a way to draw in the out-of-towners who might have their guard up about getting scammed in the big city and make them feel more at home/comfortable. "We're both southern girls!" she said to one woman.

This was a very strange experience and, although not a fraudulent company, the job is not what it is purported to be. Money is never brought up and, if you're the slightest bit shy, you won't ask. Hopefully, you'll at least be savvy enough to get on this website and do some research. I was told point blank during my interview that there would be no cold calling. When I found out on this site that it was door-to-door, I was shocked. I didn't even know that still existed!

Johnny said that he would be calling me between 2-4 IF they determined that I was eligible for a second interview. 4 P.M. Came and went and I figured, oh well. Surprise, surprise— someone called just before 5 P.M. (Another mind trick? Perhaps aimed at taking me from breathless anticipation to sorrow to the top of the world?) Again, thank you everyone from saving me corns on my feet and sunburns. I am tempted to go tomorrow just to be able to write a really detailed report about how these guys work, but I just really can't afford to take that time away from my job search. I wish I could call all those people in that waiting room and tell them to read this site!
