I had a problem - it was 98 degress and my AC unit decides to quit working. I have a bit of technical knowledge and decided out of necessity to look at the indoor unit as the compressor outdoor unit came on fine when the thermostat came on. I found a relay on the control board within the indoor unit to be arcing and unable to turn the blower on. Therefore, the only component that required replacement in my opinion was the control board.
I contacted Hibner A/C the next morning for a tech to come out - I mentioned the A/C unit I had and the control board nr in order for the tech to have a part available. About 3 hrs had past and two techs showed up - one an older senior level tech and a junior or trainee tech. The older tech decided to stay in the truck with his a/c running. The younger guy troubleshot my A/C and spent about 20 mins troubleshooting and another 10 minutes writing up the work request/proposal.
The junior tech gave me a price quote of 887.00 - I looked at him and said - this is for a control board - yes, he replied. I told him I found the board on the net for 100.00 - and that leaves 787.00 for a 2 hr job - the tech replied - well, most people don't know much about the A/C - I told him that was over 300.00 per hr labor and attorneys or Doctors don't charge that much. I paid him the 89.00 for his service call and told him no thank you.
The heat and complete frustration in the lack of honesty of the Hibner A/C Company forced me to action. I took the part nr for the board - called around for supply houses and started my journey. Once I arrived at the parts warehouse the gentleman said - you are in luck - one precise replacement part left. He bills my credit card (I didn't ask price - I was affraid to) the in bill w / tax was 48.00 - what a relief. I head back home, prepare a chair, light and fan in the attick by the A/C unit. Within 20 mins I had replaced the board with about 15 - 20 wires and my A/C was functioning fine. Total time 1.5 hrs...
Hibner A/C should be ashamed. How many older people or invalids do they screw every day. I will champion the cause to make people aware of this ripoff.
