March I sent a letter from MO to 5/3 in MI requesting that both my checking and saving accounts be closed. Since I never received another statement on either account, I (wrongly) assumed that the bank had done it's job. It is now 4. And I have just received 2 letters from collection attorneys!
Apparently (remember, no bank statements) The checking account was A) never closed with a 1.89 balance, so 5/3 tacked on a maint. Fee, which over drafted it, which caused an overdraft account that had been dormant and never needed, to go active and add on more fees maxing out that account and even activating a second dormant overdraft account. Or B) the account was closed, but within 40 days a third party, like the electric company I had set up automatic withdrawal for every month, got to override and RE-OPEN the account. This sounds like identity theft to me!
Either way I got two different stories from 2 different people on why the account is still active, no one can explain how or why I have all these fees, and the MO 5/3 branch tells me that they can see that the fees aren't my fault but since they can't interface with the MI branch, they can't help me. The MI branch won't do anything to help me and I'm near $1000 in fees all because the bank didn't close my account. How am I supposed to fight this?
I had my $5000 limit credit card numbers stolen and used in Indonesia for night vision goggles and even after it was proven ID theft I couldn't get more than a $300 card from 5/3, It went on my credit report anyway, it went to a collection agency, and my score went from 710 to the low 600's my husband and I had to get special financing for a car last summer because of this. I dread moving to NV in the next few months and getting a loan! FIFTH THIRD WILL KNOW MY NAME when I am finished with them!
