Are these legitimate postings on Craigslist? I've been searching for an accounting or bookkeeping position for sometime. I've been getting many e-mails from what appears to be a collection and/or payment agent position. Occasionally these e-mails come from Hotjobs, or in some cases I don't know where they got my contact information. However, most of these suspicious e-mails seem to be from my response to job postings on Craigslist.
It seems they want someone with a bank account to accept payments, keep 10% commission, and remit the rest. And I am wary of this, as I know about the common scam involving fake checks/money orders which look real.
When this happens, I reply (and send a copy to [email protected]) with the following memo:
This is legitimate and legal? That's what I was told a few years ago by the sender when I received fake money orders in the mail (postmarked from Benin, a neighbor to Nigeria) that looked real. But I got wary and decided to research before trying to cash them. And voila! I learned that the checks were counterfeit, and the whole deal was a scam. THEREFORE I AM WELL AWARE OF FAKE CHECK AND PHISHING SCAMS!
Even if this is a legitimate and legal operation, it is still fake advertising. I applied to this position because it was supposed to be a bookkeeping/accounting position, not a payment or collection agent. So if nothing else, this job posting is a misleading advertisement!!
