Cancelled Check AFTER I worked for them for a full week as their nanny for their infant son

I was hired on a 'trial' basis as a nanny by the Raffone's. The understanding/agreement between both the Raffone family and myself was that there would be an initial, no obligation 30 day trial period. The trial period enabled either party to cancel the employment immediately without advanced notice.

The reason for the trial period would be used to determine if they were a fit for me as an employer and if I was a fit for them as a nanny. I agreed to the trial period and began my first week on February 16. The understanding for the trial was that after the 30 day trial, if both agreed to continue, a one year formal contract would be signed by both parties.

On the Friday of the 1st week of work, the Raffone's had determined they really liked me as a nanny and wanted me on a full time regular basis and presented me with a contract to take home, review and sign/return to them by the following Monday. This was not according to our initial trial agreement and I wasn't prepared to make an immediate decision, but being forced to decide so soon, I determined the position was not going to work out for me as the contract details were not what I was initially led to believe.

On Saturday 21 February I notified the Raffone's that I would not be continuing in the position.
During the call, Jaime was very nice to me when I let her know I wouldn't be working for them, she told me she was very disappointed that I didn't want to work for them, but she completely understood that we were still in a trial period and wished me luck in the future. She told me it was a good thing her mom was visiting for two weeks to help her out while she found a new nanny.
Jaime then asked me to mail back their house key to prevent the expense of changing the locks and I did.
The Raffone's then put a stop payment on my paycheck and the check bounced back to me.

Upon notification of the bad check, I called to ask why they had stopped payment when I had worked for them for the entire week and earned my paycheck. Jaime was nasty and claimed that my quitting the position was a huge inconvenience to her and she felt she was justified in canceling my check. Jaime also said it was my fault that she needed to take a week off work to find another nanny, yet this was untrue as her mother was visiting from Michigan for two weeks and was there to assist with the baby just as Jaime had stated to me on the phone when I quit.in addition, Jaime works from home and has the ability to set her own hours.

Jaime also tried to say the cancellation was partly due to having to change the locks on their door; however, during the initial phone call, Jaime stated that if I returned their house key, WHICH I DID, that there wouldn't be any problems as they wouldn't need to change their locks and the trial would be considered over by mutual agreement.

I reminded Jaime again that I was still within my 'trial' period to quit as agreed and if their family had decided that I wasn't a 'fit' for them, they could also have terminated me without prior notice, but Jaime didn't let me speak, she was rude and unreasonable and cut off my words when I tried to speak. She said if I wanted to argue over the stop payment of my wages, I should hire an attorney and have my attorney call their attorney to fight them.

*This is a warning to anyone who is considering employment with the RAFFONE'S - IF you do decide to work for them; you are taking a 100% risk of not being paid for the work you provide! Keep it in mind, unless you don't

If the Raffone's do the right thing by paying me $400.00 for the hours I worked, I will update this report accordingly. Until I receive payment in full with a GOOD check that doesn't bounce, I will continue to report them as deadbeat employers.
