I needed an addition added to an existing home back in 2004. I hired Troy Duncan (my next door neighbor) after he made it clear he would take care of us. My situation was this. My father died and his mother (my grandmother) was living with him and was 96 yrs old at the time. We were in a time constraint to get going on this project since she was now going to lose her home. I was over a barrel and Troy knew it and took full advantage of it.
We agreed to terms and signed contracts and the work began. At the time Troy had his son Travis and a friend doing most of the day to day work. Troy, who lives 100 ft away would never come over, never answer his phone unless I jumped his fence and cornered him. He would always blame his son or his wife or someone else for whatever the problem was. Every single person that worked on our home ended up putting a lien on our house due to the fact that he was not paying them. He would then tell those workers that we had not paid him, making us out to be that bad guys. Luckily they all knew he was a liar and we managed to get them all paid usually after I would again corner Troy at his house. I caught him using old material on the house more than once and made him take it off for the new material I had paid for. Troy would take any and all new and old material that he could from my house back to his own home. He is such a braggart that he would tell me how he would use old materials from other homes and charge people full price for the same materials later. All of the windows that were installed by Troy were in wrong. I had to have the original manufacturer come to the house and fix them. He said they had been installed incorrectly. No suprise there. The jacuzzi tub that was installed had a hole put in it by Troys son. No responce from Troy. My basement leaked for 3 years after the build until I finally fixed it myself. I was required by the county to upgrade my existing septic system with an additional lateral line. As of now 12/22 it is not done and I still have no Certificate of Occupency almost 4 yrs later. The deck that was added to the back of our home had to be completely dismanteled and put back together with proper braces and material. I had walls with no insulation in them that had to be filled later with blown in insulation. I have electrical switches that don't operate anything. I could go on and on but I hate reliving it over and over. I have fixed most all of it now.
I am fortunate enough to be able to handle my own problems but I know there are people out there hurt by this guy who are not able to fight back. I paid a little over $200,000 for $150,000 worth of work. None of which Troy ever personally over saw or laid a hand on. All I ever noticed from him was his new toys he brought home everytime he recieved a payment from us. Race cars, Hummer, new truck, etc. I have since learned so much about this man. I can only do my part now to help others to see this guy for what he is before they are too far in to get out like I was. If you are looking for work to be done keep looking, and know that you have dodged a bullet avoiding this p.O.S.
