I received an unaddressed letter along with a check in the amount of $4955.46 to my parent's home informing me that I was 1 out of 16 winners in a 3rd category that would be receiving another lump sum check of $120,000 once I deposited the initial check into my account. When I asked how I was selected, he told me that I had used my debit card at a Wal-Mart and from that transaction I was entered into a sweepstakes.in the letter was a side note stating that the check sent was for the purpose of payment of Canadian Non-Resident Government Service Tax in the amount of $3144.55.
As good as it sounded, I remembered the saying if something is too good to be true it usually is. The check enclosed looks very authentic and my sister who works at the bank could not even detect the difference. I decided to do my own research before I became too happy and the first thing I did was look to see the bank was valid.
When I went online I found that the address of the bank on the check was 1 number off from the actual address. The correct address is 2301 S. Kingshighway Blvd. The second thing I did was look for the address of the company on the check - not to my surprise it was not such an address or a name of that company listed. As I continued my search, I came across this web site in which I found someone who had received the exact same letter.
To whomever may receive such a letter, please throw it away. Save yourself the time and heartache. It is a scam. If you have to give money in order to receive money, a red light should go off in your brain. I hope the police catch the person responsible for this ongoing scam.
