Oakstone looks like a really nice place to live from the outside, but once they charm you into renting from them you quickly realize that looks can be deceiving.
My one concern was not being able to hear my neighbors and was told that the units were sound conditioned. Yeah, sound conditioned to hear everything from the tv, doors slamming, cabinets closing, simple conversations, toilets flushing, phones, and even the computer turning on.
But the biggest frustration was the office. I should've known from dealing with them from the start what to expect. They ask you for so much of your personal information that you come away feeling violated and exposed.
Buying a house doesn't even require all the information you're forced to give them. I don't like giving them my checking account info and social security numbers on everyone in the apartment either. I signed a one year lease for $850 ending Feb 08. The lease ends and I get told rent will be $917. Complications arise from filling out tons of paperwork again and I'm told they'll contact me when the lease is ready.
Well, next I hear from them is in August telling me rent will be $988. Now technically I should've been on a year lease at this point which would've been locked in for $917, but that didn't happen. I ended up signing a year lease October 1st. Unsure of future plans, I signed a year because I was afraid of another rent increase, but no matter how many times I tried to explain that they screwed up, I ended up paying for it.
So, after all that I get an eviction letter asking for almost $300 to cover Aug and Sept because that's when the new rent took effect even though I didn't sign until Oct.
Well, I get that cleared up and then I receive a letter stating I owe $20.83 more from an audit that showed not enough rent has been paid. If I don't pay you better believe there will be an eviction notice soon.
My neighbor told me that his rent will go from $874 to $1025 if he stays, but luckily he's moving. I've rented for a lot of years and never have I had so many frustrations like I have with Oakstone. The rental experience truly leaves you feeling outraged and used. The only thing they care about is the property and the money, not the tenants. Your income doesn't go up, but they expect you to cover huge rent increases, and if you don't they have no problems putting an eviction notice on your door, even if you're a good renter.
A few other issues like air filters that should be replaced monthly get replaced every 6 months. This caused an allergic reaction in my apartment, so I bought an air purifier to help, and just ended up buying filters myself.
They provide washers, but the washers are so dirty looking it's scary. The washer is so cheap it only has one setting and that's heavy duty. It will ruin your clothes trust me. It twists them up and stretches them.
The dryer vent was so clogged it stopped the dryer from drying. We paid to have someone come check it out. He told us in all his years he had never seen a vent so clogged. He told us that its condition was a serious fire hazard and he was shocked it hadn't caught on fire yet.
I don't smoke, but they took those privileges away from people and now they force people to smoke out by the curb. Lets just say the curb appeal has gone down drastically.
I'd think twice before renting here. You're neighbors will drive you crazy and you'll be paying rent every month just to be miserable. That I can promise you.
