I was feeding my terminally ill son when the door bell rang one evening. The young man said he had noticed my security sign out front and did I know that my company was going out of business and because their equipment was outdated they had contracted his company to take over and update my current system. I told him that I was feeding my son, but he asked if he could come in and check my current system. He had identification, so I allowed him in. Big mistake. He immediately begin telling me that I needed this and I needed that and he would give this all to me for free if I put HIS sign out in front of my house. If I hadn't been predisposed, I would have went to the phone to call my current security company and find out if any of this were true, but, I was feeding my son. He said that my rates would go up a little, but that I would have all these added features.
My son took a turn for the worse for the next few days and my mind was not on security systems. When things settled down and I had time to think, I called my security system and told them what had transpired, and they informed me that they were not going out of business, they had not sent any representative out and that I was a victim of fraud. I immediately contacted ICON securities to cancel the contract, but it was a Saturday and there wasn't anyone there. I faxed a cancellation the following Monday. None of my paperwork had a date on it, so I couldn't remember when I had signed anything. The next day, I received a bill from ADT Security for two months payment. I had no idea how ADT had come into the picture at all. I called them to say, "I don't do business with you", and sent the bill back.
In the mean time, I contacted the Better Business Bureau in Utah and filed a complaint. This all started in August and I have been battling back and forth every since. I still have a contract copy with no dates, but their copy miracuously has dates. They claim that I am liable to them for three years.
And... They tell me that Icon only sells the equipment and ADT bills and monitors their system. The sales rep, DeLorne Collette, mentioned ADT during his pitch and I told him that I had never wanted to do business with them. They had the contract with my church at one time and the church had nothing but problems with them, so had switched to another company for better service and less fee. He never told me that ADT would be billing me, in fact I asked him specifically who would be billing me and he said ICON.
I feel so dumb, but yet I also feel that I was taken advantage of. Any decent sales person seeing what I was going through with my son would have said, "I see this is a bad time for you, I will contact you later". But this man saw an old woman who was very vunerable at the time and knew I would be an easy target.
Beware of ICON Securities - they are not an honest company.
