I apply for this job right out of college, I think that is the age group that this company is praying for. I went there for my first interview, went great met the owner of the company, seemed like a nice guy. He told me to call back in a few days to set up an interview.
I went back for my interview to find out that we were going somewhere with a couple employees and me. Granted I had been told this was a marketing position that does advertising for sports. And was getting into the advertising business of cosmetics. I got in the car with two female employees to be greeted by one of them asking if they could smoke. I said no, considering I was dressed in my finest business attire while they had on tight, see through, halter tops and tight leather pants. I was told we were going across town to meet with some prospectives. During this time on the drive I was asked multiple questions about marketing and sales, and distribution of products, we were about half way to our sales area when the pulled out what they were selling. A cheap, makeup kit. At this time I realized that this was not in fact a marketing advertising company, but a door to door sales soliciting company. I was stuck in this car with two women that were smoking, cussing, talking about when the last time they got drunk, and how crazy it was, and we were on our way to our prospectives, which were local business fronts.
Lets go back though to when I was looking for a position in the marketing, advertising world. I found their ad on Monster.com and also craigslist, saying that they were a high energy, fast paced company, that had high business people, including the Dodgers baseball company and such. When I first visited the website after getting quite excited about the job, which said it was salaried at around 35,000 a year with full benefits, flexible hours, and such I couldn't wait to meet the company. I found out in that car ride that, your pay was completely comissioned based making ten dollars for every product sold. There were no benefits, and your hours of work were from 8:00 to 6:30, on the streets selling and 6:30-8:00 back at the office collecting your pay for the day. I was appalled I couldn't wait to leave, but I didn't know how to get out of it. I finally lied and told them I had an emergency and needed to be taken back to my car. This company completely lies to their prospective, young, unknowing employees, they tell you its great pay, flexible hours, and full benefits, when really you are a door to door sales person making as little as zero dollars a day.
