A little confusing, but bear with me.
I got a takeout order & paid with a debit card. The very next day, I accessed my checking account for recent activity. I happened to stumble on the charge from the previous night & found that this establishment "helped themselves" to a 20% tip.
I called the owner to question this, which is moot. I didn't really understand her explanation. She said the bank did it. (???).
I called my bank & spoke to a rep. He told me that this is a common practice, especially for hotels & car rentals. He advised me that even though the initial charge was 20% over what my receipt said, they adjusted the amount showing the actual payment I made.
Even though I didn't suffer any damages, what right do they have processing UNAUTHORIZED charges in the first place? Is this legal? I signed the receipt for a certain amount & that's what they should've put through in the first place. Although they did adjust the amount, I believe that this is unethical & immoral.
