I received a letter in the mail from Shopping Essentials Plus, indicating that I should have recieved my Welcome Materials either by mail or e-mail, and I was currently within my 7-day trial period. If I did nothing, then the membership fee of $19.95 would be charged to "the credit card account I authorized".
I called the toll free number and reached a Call Center in Houston, Tx. Handling calls for Shopping Essentials Plus and the agent I spoke to told me that I had recently purchased something on-line with my AMEX, and was offered a $25.00 K-Mart gift card free to become a member of Shopping Essentials Plus. They told me I selected YES at that option.
I told her (Tee was her name and her #19756) I wanted to speak to a supervisor and she transferred me to Carlos #18228. Carlos informed me that either I, or someone in my household had used my AMEX on a web-site NEVER BLUE, and a POP UP window offered the K-Mart gift card, and the option YES was selected.
I asked what Shopping Essentials does for a living, and they said they sell Gift Cards for various stores at discounts of 20%. I asked about the $19.95 fee, and was informed that was a monthly fee, not a one time charge as indicated in the letter.
I asked Carlos for the mailing address and the President of the Company's Name. The President is Gary Johnson, and the company is located in Omaha, Nebraska. I assured Carlos that I would be reporting this incident for further action to be taken.
