Today, about 9:30 am in Louisiana, I received an incoming call on my cell phone. This call was from Ronnie Wilson (foreign accent) representing the Government Grant Information Center. He had all of my personal information and provided me with my home and address and telephone number (all which is on public record). He told me the government had selected me to receive a grant in the amount of $5000 US dollars. I told him that I was not interested in the any of the government's money.
He kept insisting that I give him my routing and account number to my bank. I told him that I did not feel comfortable discussing my personal account information with him. If he could give me a telephone number that I would call his business back. He said that after the confirmation process, my call would be forward to the grant disbursement for my particular state. I still refused. He then told me he could give me my routing number and all I had to do was confirm my account number. I told him no and that I was not going to discuss the matter any further and I was not interested.
Just a couple of points. I am in Louisiana. He is calling from Utah on a Saturday morning. What government office in the United States is open at 6 or 7 am on the weekend? Further more, I am a victim of Hurricane Katrina. I applied for all of the assistance I could during this time period and was not eligible for anything. Why would the government want to all of a sudden give me 5 thousand dollars? Whoever these people are they are smart enough not to give a phone number. Don't give your information out. Routing numbers are not confidential.
