Magellon Walker III, a former Taft College football stand out (1979-1981) may be approaching a different sort of record nowadays. Walker, who lives in Southwest Bakersfield is among several Bakersfield Dead-Beat-Dads who's past due child support payment are reaching astronomical amounts. At more than Two Hundred Thousand Dollars, ($200,000.00) in arrears, Walker, a former State Corrections Officer who retired on disability, is part of a growing group of men throughout the county who, for many years, seem to get away with non-payment of court ordered payments to former spouses on behalf of their offspring.
According to his ex-wife, it has taken nearly five years to reach a point where County Child Support Services has finally begun attaching Walker's retirement check in an effort to recoup the missed payments for his three sons.
Technical problems, court delays, questionable legal maneuverings by Mr. Walker's pro bono attorney, and Mr. Walker's claim of a close relationship with the District Attorney's office, have all contributed to the former Mrs. Walkers problems in holding her ex-husband accountable.
In Mrs. Walker was forced to sell the family's home of fifteen years, and move herself and her three sons into a tiny rental. Meanwhile, Mr. Walker has somehow been able to purchase a large, lovely Southwest Bakersfield home for more than Three Hundred Thousand Dollars. He also is a regular patron at a local cigar aficionado hangout located under the Haberfield Building on Seventeenth Street where he enjoys expensive stogies, before spending the night on the town with friends at the Casa Blanca Night Club. Due to a proviso in the law that allows him to keep his California Drivers Licsense, Walker is able to travel freely to Los Angeles, where he works as a bodyguard for celebrities, among them, according to the stories he tells while puffing on an expensive cigar, Sylvester Stallone, and numerous Rap stars.
Meanwhile, Walker's former wife continues her struggles to raise three teen aged boys on her thirty thousand dollar yearly salary, clear up IRS bills left by her ex-husband, and deal with frivolous court appearances intended to harass her and waste her time and resources.
At the current, meager rate of recovery of past due child support payments to Mrs. Walker and her three sons, it is unlikely that all of the arrearages will ever be paid in full.
