Last week, a very appealing young man came to my door with a convincing pitch to sell magazines or books but when I showed no interest in these he convinced me to donate three magazines to sick children at a St Jude Hospital who were suffering from cancer.
He said he lived in the neighborhood and was trying to earn a trip to Hawaii after his baseball team had won a state title. Said he was a senior in HS but he looked much more mature. He also offered to come by later and wash the car, do yard work or just about anything I asked.
Like a complete fool I believed him. He rattled on with a whole lot more fantasy stories: he lived just one street over, his father was a plastic surgeon, they have puppies due soon, he is going to the university in the fall as a pre-vet student. He also said he would come by the next day with his mother to meet me (when they got home from church, of course).
Well, he did not come by. Even then I did not become suspicious until after the three days had passed and it was too late to get my $99. Check back. I did a search and found reports on this web site with almost identical sales pitches from this company's young sales force but with a different name, same location. If only I had done this sooner.
Although I have always been careful of fraud, I was completely fooled by this engaging young man named Kyle Gantry (or Gautry, not sure). When he said, "God bless you, " as his good-bye, warning bells should have gone off. Too late for me to realize that I had been scammed! Sigh! Of course, I hate to waste the money but worse is to feel like a fool and be taken in so easily.
Kyle, if you ever read this, please stop this life of lying and cheating. With your skills and good charm, you could get a real job and be highly successful and you could even sleep at night with a clear conscience.instead you make kind people like me learn to be even more cynical and distrusting.
I will never give anything to anyone going door-to-door again. Later I will check if the three sick kids with cancer at St Judes got any magazines. I doubt it but hope never dies completely. At least then the $99 will not be totally wasted and just maybe I will regain a little bit of my good faith in people.
