I moved from Los Angeles to Austin recently and used PODS for the move. I was originally planning on throwing everything into a UHaul and doing the move in one fell swoop, but then I looked up moving costs for UHaul and then got an estimate from PODS and the PODS estimate was actually going to be around $500 cheaper than a UHaul, after gas and mileage. It was a no brainer to go with them, seeing as how I would be able to do the move on my own time with PODS.
So, I made a reservation by phone with them. The lady on the phone gave me an estimate for the move which turned out to be exactly what I ended up paying. The container arrived without a hassle onto my driveway. I spent a week or so loading my stuff into the POD, and then I made a reservation for them to take it away and transfer it to Austin. I didn't even have to be there when the POD came and took the container away.
Once I got to Austin and found locked an apartment down, I scheduled the final delivery for the container and again it came without hassle, I wasn't even there at the time of delivery. I unpacked all of it. Some stuff fell over but I don't blame PODS for that, I did a pretty poor job packing it all up, and PODS came and took the container away after a few days.
PODS gave me the freedom to move on my own terms, without an apartment locked down at my destination. It was as hassle free as I could have ever imagined, as I was assuming it would have been a nightmare coordinating apartment hunting with UHaul moving. I probably wouldn't go through them if it wasn't such a big out of state move, but for this move it was perfect.
