Consumer Report

Signed up (like a dummy) for their "free 10 day trial". I had just spoken with my Father 79 years old, whom I have not been very close to over the years and after speaking with him I became very interested in his family history and started doing some searches online when I ran across this company.

I singed up for the free trial so i could look at their content knowing that i would have to cancel befor ethe 10 days were up to make sure I was NOT billed. I didn't wait, I cancelled within 48 hours. The gentleman I spoke with seemed very nice over th ephone, after a brief conversation he stated that the membership would be cancelled, I would not be billed anything and provided me a cancellation confirmation number.

Sure enough within a week i happened to be looking over my debit transactions online and saw that they had in fact billed me $7.95. I immediately called them to inquire about the billing and was a little surprised that the guy that answered sounded like the same gentleman I had spoken to previously calling himself "Adam". I demanded to know why I was billed after I had cancelled well within the stated cancellation period? He explained that sometimes people set up a duplicate account and didn't remember that they had previously signed up and therefore creating another account which was not cancelled along withthe other one. I call BS on it and asked him how many accounts does he show for me and he stated 1, so it made NO sense. I asked to speak with a supervisor. "Mary Lou" at extention 7638 get on the line and I give her the same explanation of my issue, give her my previous cancellation confirmation number and tell her I want the refund and membership cancelled. So, she says she looks in the computer and doesn't see where the cancellation was made the first time and why it wasn't processed, but not to worry she would take care of it right away. When she said she had completed the cancellation, I asked for the new confirmation cancellation confirmation number and wouldn't you know it, it was the exact same number I was given previously!!! When I asked her how it could be the same if the first one was never processed? She was first a little shocked and said "it's the same number?" I said "YES!" She explained that that since I had called the first time there is a cancellation number now associated with my account and all transactions for my account will now use that same number? But I thought it "wasn't processed the first time", so why would there be this same number???

This has SCAM written all over it. Usually when you cancell a subscription that has used your cc billing information you receive an email from the company which confirms that cancellation so that should have been my first red flag, i did ask about this the first time and the guy said that their company didn't do that since they were clearing the info out of the system, which is why I was sure to ask for a cancellation number! Don't know if I'll actually see that refund posted back to my checking account but i have done is called the bank and alerted them to this company's shady practices and asked that they block all future transactions and was told that I should simply cancel my debit card and order a new one to avoid them being able to continue to charge me for a failed cancellation for their subscription/services.
