I used Mr Brocklebank's services in November to repair an evaporative air conditioning unit in my rental property. He invoiced me $2800 for fan motor and assembly/cowel/remote/receiver/control box/pump/service. Two years later the unit gave trouble again and he charged me $1032 for set of pads/water pump/float valve/sol valve/labour.
The unit packed up earlier this month and Mr Brocklebank said it could not be fixed and that he would replace it for $3000 and that he wanted payment in full before placing an order. We transferred the money into his bank account and he said he would go on 27 February to install it. He did not show up, we have not heard from him since and his phone is switched off. Mr Brocklebank's mother Valerie worked with me at the tax office and his sister worked there until recently. I used his services in good faith but it looks like he has scammed us not just this time but I have serious doubts about the quality of his work and whether the previous two occasions were opportunities for him to fleece us. Very disappointing to know that a former colleague's son has swindled me. Consumer protection will not get involved because it is a rental and I am not a consumer in the eyes of the law. But I am a lawyer and I plan to pursue this in a Magistrate's court. Fortunately I have receipts for the payments and I also have previous invoices for the substandard repair work he has carried out.
