Last year (early Feb '12), I was job hunting, and in order to apply for a job, I was prompted to obtain my credit score using Profinity. I did so, and of course there turned out to be no job. I was aware that I needed to cancel the automatic credit monitoring service in order to avoid being charged the $29.99/month fee for the service. I forgot - my bad - and was charged $29.99 ONE time, on 2/8. I then called and CANCELLED the service. I never was charged again, and this has been confirmed by my bank. Then all of a sudden, I get charged $79.95 today. I call the various numbers provided TWICE, I get 2 guys in a row whose demeanors are totally obfuscating and unprofessional. I ask why I have been charged, and they say for membership fees. I tell them I cancelled my membership last year, they say no, your account is still active. I say, what was the membership fee? They say, 29.99 a month. I say then why have I never been charged since 2/8/12? One said he didn't know, the other said my card was declined. (Total BS, as my bank paid the charge on 2/8, and no other charges were attempted until today, 2/13). I say, if the charge is 29.99 a month, why was I charged 79.95? The first guy said it was for two months of service. I said how does 29.99 x 2 = 79.95 and he would not answer my question. The second guy said it was because it was for an annual fee. I questioned the rationality of all of this to both of them (ie, very simple math is not adding up here!) and both of them responded the exact same way - first by trying to talk circles around me (that is not going to work on me) and then with open and direct hostility. I had not raised my voice, called anyone names, or verbally attacked anyone. I simply kept stating the same simple questions over and over. And yet both the men started raising their voices at me, interrupting me, accusing ME of being abusive, obstinate, etc, and then hung up on me. Now, after many years of being a functional adult in the business world, I know there is a way that call center reps at real, reputable companies behave. They do not interrupt, they do not raise their voices, they do not accuse their customers or call them names, and they NEVER hang up on their customers. These people are obviously total crooks whose M.O. Relies on the fact that most people probably will forget to cancel, or not notice the charge, or just complicitly accept what they are told - that they should have cancelled, and now they are responsible for the charges. Well, I questioned their scam and they had no answers for me, and instead attacked me. I have filed a claim with my bank and had that debit card cancelled.
