Customer Service - High Speed Internet

I only have internet service through Comcast. I have been with them from the very beginning, back when the internet service was being provided by At Home. Anyway, it's Labor Day weekend, Saturday morning and my internet is not working. I call customer service and they tell me my modem is broken. I rent the modem through Comcast. They charge me $5 a month for the privilege. They tell me to go to the nearest customer service center to swap my modem. I told the lady that there's a customer service center down the street. However, I am informed that it recently closed down and that the closest center is about 10 miles away. I go to that center only to see a line of people going half way down the block. There's only 2 people working at the counter. All the people are angry complaining that their local centers had closed down. I could not wait so I went to a friend's apartment and went to the Comcast website to try to find another center. I could not find anything on their website about any centers. Its like Comcast does not want people going to their customer service centers. So I call Comcast to get an address to another center. A message informs me that they are experiencing higher than expected call volume and that my wait is going to be about 10 minutes. I was on hold for 1 hour and 20 minutes.By the time I spoke to someone it was almost 1 o'clock and I was angry as hell. I cancelled my service and went to the nearest CLEAR center. I was informed that they did not have any towers near my home and that I couldn't get the service at my home until early next year. I ended up going to Best Buy and purchasing my own modem. I called back Comcast and had them reconnect my internet service. When I called them this time, I indicated that I was a new customer and was connected to a representative within 2 minutes. I had no choice but to go back to Comcast. There's only 2 other providers of internet service in my area, AT&T and Wide Open West. I have had bad experiences with AT&T in the past and Wide Open West has a terrible reputation for internet service in my area. When I cancelled my service the representative told me that it wasn't their fault that they were experiencing high call volume. I told him it was their fault because obviously they did not have enough people answering calls. It was also their fault that they have closed down so many of their customer service centers. I told him that if Comcast had low rates I would have no problem putting up with shoddy customer service, but since they are the most expensive, the least they could do is provide reasonable customer service.

I plan on switching to another provider the first chance I get. I am going to keep an eye out for another provider. Terrible experience with Comcast. Ruined my weekend.
