Sampubco is an online company that supplies genealogists with copies of microfilmed wills and other documents. It is run by one man. He listed many "rules" on the website which made me a little worried. But I checked online and found no complaints about his service. I found two wills I was interested in. There were two ways to recieve copies. The more expensive was scanned, and recieved over the internet or by paper copy, snail-mail. I chose the second. The website stated that after he recieved the order he would email when the copies were on their way. This could take up to 30 days. My check was cashed May 2. I did not recieve and email EVER! I sent an email in June and did not get a response. Finally on July 11 the copies arrived by mail. The copies were so dark and small that I could not even read them with a large magnifying glass. I decided to contact Sampubco and see if there was a chance that I could have them redone. Here is a copy of my first email:
Dear Mr. Samuelson,
I don't know if you care or not. You didn't do anything that your website
said you would do when I sent in my order. You did not send me an email
informing me of anything. My check was cashed in May and my records were not received until after July 11. The copies of the wills I ordered are so dark and small I can not even read them with a large magnifying glass. I am wondering if you would consider re-doing them? I had also sent an email inquiring why my order was taking so long and got no response. My suspicions are that there will be no response to this one either. But I can only live in hope...
And his reply:
That was the BEST copy possible. I can not redo any better. That is
Frederick County, Maryland. The clerk there hired mircrofilm operator
long time ago without any sense of the meaning of quality. If you ordered SCANNED image instead of paper, you won't have the problem. If I answer every whining message I will never get anything done!
This company has been copying these records for a long time. Therefore he must know that the copies are illegible but yet he continues to take money and send them to people. I sent him a second email stating this and asking him why he continued to do this work if he didn't enjoy it. Here is his second response:
I made it very clear on website - "Best copy possible" so I didn't rip
off anyone! And you are ONLY ONE complaining about the dark copy.
And whining ones? Usually turned out they didn't read the policy.
I complained to the BBB of Utah and recieved an email today that there was no response to the complaint by Sampubco. So they closed the complaint. There goes $24 down the drain!
