Back in December 1999, PacBell ran full page ad promising "FREE
DSL INSTALLATION & MODEM FOR ONLY $29.95/Month!" "No dial-up
line-drops... No need for a 2nd dedicated-line...'always on' service... 24/7 tech help... And mega-modem-speed! What a deal...
If only it worked! First I had to wait 3 months for the installer
and even he got endless "time-out" messages. He left without
getting the system up & handed me an 800 tech-support number to call. (The same one that he couldn't get through on!) This became an ongoing nightmare. — spending hours days, weeks & months on hold... Listening to one inept "tech" contradict the other (without resolve). I was bounced around from at least 12
different divisions — in different locations — total chaos
and fragmentation. When I cancelled my "service" — I was charged $400. After speaking and writing to their San Francisco
headquarters, I was promised a credit, which has yet to materialize. It's June and the arbitrary $400 charge still
appears every month. The true villain is sbc communications —
the largest communications monopoly in the us. They're buying
up local phone companies throughout the country and ripping everyone off!
