I sold a 40gb PS3 on eBay, listing everything accurately about it. Everything worked in perfect condition when I shipped it off. I sold it for $390, and naturally eBay charged me a $6 listing fee as well as a $15 final value fee. I used PayPal for payment, so they charged me $11 for using them.
Several weeks passed, and the woman I sold the PS3 to told me that she thought it played PS2 games when she bought it, which is completely invalid, as Sony does not make a 40gb system that is backward compatible.
The woman filed a dispute with PayPal with this information and asked for a full refund. Naturally, I pushed it to a claim for PayPal to "review" the case. Literally 4 months later, after more than 10 emails to PayPal about the case, they contacted me stating that they ruled in her favor and refunded her the money.
Naturally, PayPal charged me another $11 for the transaction back to her. So a month later (we are up to 6 months now total for the whole transaction) I received the PS3 back. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed that the plastic top of the PS3 was cracked across the middle and completely scratched and blemished. So I plugged in the system to play a game and, big surprise, it would not even load a disc into the slot.
I contacted PayPal right away stating it was messed up. They put in an appeal "case" for the system. Again, I waited another month (up to 7 months total for the transaction), and finally they stated that the woman who bought it said she returned the system because it did not work.
Therefore, she completely changed her story. I provided all the saved emails to them as proof that she lied, and they still denied me.
Final note:
After all was said and done between PayPal and eBay, I was not only charged $43 for all the listing and transaction fees, but they also wasted 7 months of my time. In the end, I was left with a big hole in my pocket and a broken PS3.
Moral of the story: sell your stuff on Craigslist! It is not worth the extra $20 you can make on eBay. PayPal and eBay charge you that much, and there is no dispute department!
