Illegally Obtained Credit Card Information

The other day I was contacted by my credit card company and was alerted that a $1 charge was made on my credit card as an "activation fee" with NetZero. I had never heard of NetZero. And the transaction occurred at a time where I knew I (along with nobody in my family) had not been on the internet to sign up with such a company. My credit card company gave me a toll free number to call to find out more information about this charge.

When I called I was connected to some call center in India. The gentleman I spoke with told me their computers were down and he could not help me. He asked me to call back 5 to 6 hours later. I called back one hour later and spoke with a different rep.in India and I explained my situation. He looked up my name and my credit card number and said nothing was on file. I asked if Netzero charges a $1 activation fee and the man said "yes." I told him that I never signed up with Netzero and that I have a different internet provider. He told me that someone else must have set up an account in my name.

The way that man was talking was very suspicious to me because he didn't seem concerned or surprised about what I was saying. His affect over the phone was strange. He asked if a different credit card could have been used and asked for that number. I foolishly gave him that number and he put me on hold. As I was waiting on hold, I decided to look on the internet to see if any other consumers had complained of identity theft or fraud with NetZero. I suddenly came across this site and realized I had just given this man a second credit card number. I was furious.

When the man came back on the phone I confronted him about what I was reading on the internet and he had nothing to say. He was silent. I asked him if Netzero was in the practice of stealing credit card information and setting up false accounts. Again he said nothing. He ended up saying that I should wait until I get my credit card statement and then call back to have my account cancelled. I reminded him that he said there was no record of me having an account with Netzero. Again, he was silent. Something is very corrupt with this company. I advise anyone who does have an account with Netzero to watch their personal information carefully. If you cancel your account with them watch your bills carefully.

For anyone who has been victimized by this company or who was once a member and continues to get billed by Netzero contact your credit card company and file a fraud alert. Also, contact Experion, Equifax, etc. And file a fraud alert so that you can obtain your free credit file (to make sure that all of your credit is in good standing), also PLEASE contact the Federal Trade Commission! This is very important because NetZero deserves to be put out of business and they owe a lot of people money.

It is very important to file a report with the FTC because this government organization will only take action when they notice a trend of similar complaints regarding a particular company. Stay away from Netzero! In my opinion they are sneaky and corrupt!
