I have bought two different Maxtor hard drives and two rebate forms were issued by the store's computer system. I bought the second Maxtor drive based on the suggestion of the sales clerk, who has empathized with my issue of lost data due to hard drive failure, and suggested an external drive for a backup of my data. I had purchased that drive because of that recommendation and expecting a $90 rebate. The rebate was a deciding factor in this purchase.
Both drives were made by Maxtor and and it turns out that the offer is limited to only one per household. Since both drives were on the same receipt, only one rebate was valid and the second (greater) rebate was declined. Yet both rebate forms were printed during a sale.
I went to the store and discussed this problem with the manager, Mike. I provided copies of all of the documents. He indicated that the sales clerk would not be aware that one of the rebates would not be applicable because they do not receive that kind of information, and they rely on the computer system to issue proper and valid rebate forms.
The way I see it, there are three faults here:
Your computer is generating invalid rebate forms during the sale.
Your system is acknowledging multiple rebates at various times. I mailed the rebates simultaneously yet they were entered in the database days apart.
The sales personnel are not informed of all of the guidelines of the transactions and inadvertently deceive customers.
I have done everything correctly and in good faith. Office Depot's system had failed me every step of the way and all I got for this was your apology for my inconvenience. A loss of $90 is not an inconvenience it is a breach of the busines's responsibility to customers to provide fair and honest service. I plan to report my problems to the BBB, FTC and your state attorney general's office.
