Ebay has a privacy policy that says that only in certain cases a user can request the contact information from another user (full name, private phone number, etc.)
I had placed a bid on a car auction by an-ford_of_north_scottsdale I did not win the auction because I was outbid but shortly after I received a note from ebay that this user had requested my contact information and that my name / private phone number was given to him. According to ebay, this user was Lou Grubb Ford. Since there was no transaction between us and I don't have zero feedback, this user was violating ebays privacy policy. He did not have any reason to request my user information, otherwise I could have placed the bid under my real name and my private phone number.
I asked the user why he requested my contact information and he told me "I am not Lou Grubb, I did not request your user information" I am assuming that this car dealer requests names and phone numbers in order to enlarge his database and call people up to sell them something else than what they were initially bidding on.
So, who did it? I contacted ebay and they send me a standard letter with links to their policy without answering my questions or investigating this case.
Conclusion: If you place a bid on ebay, anybody can request your user info (your real name, your phone number) It is against ebays policy but ebay won't do anything about it.
