Charge me for no help was told to take to shop but fixed myself, ripoff

I was told my modem was unable to communicate with my computer however after 2 tech support calls was finally told to take to shop and have fixed. I am not very computer smart but was finally able to configure the modem and port it went to! So why should i have to pay for no help and would have cost me even more had i listened!
